What Is IUI (Intrauterine Insemination)?

In IUI, a semen sample is washed to separate the most active sperm, which are then placed inside the uterus with a thin tube around the time an egg is released. The sperm start closer to the egg, but fertilization still has to happen naturally in the fallopian tube. No anaesthesia or hospital stay is involved.

Consultations and follicle scans are done at our Vashi clinic, and the insemination itself is carried out at Nulife IVF in Seawoods. IUI cycles are planned by Dr. Grishma Ranjangaonkar, a gynecologist and trained Infertility Specialist. She decides on IUI only after examining you and reading both partners’ reports, and results differ from couple to couple.

Is IUI the Right Option for You?

IUI is not the right first step for every couple. It can only work when at least one fallopian tube is open, an egg is being released (on its own or with medicines) and enough moving sperm remain once the sample is prepared. That is why a fertility evaluation of both partners comes before any insemination.

When both tubes are blocked, the sperm count is very low or endometriosis is severe, IUI is unlikely to help, and Dr. Grishma will talk you through other treatment instead.

How IUI Treatment Works, Step by Step

A cycle of IUI is mostly a handful of short visits spread across one month, with scans at the Vashi clinic and the insemination at Nulife IVF in Seawoods.

1

Consultation and Tests

Both partners attend the first visit. Bring earlier semen reports, scans and prescriptions, so only the tests that are missing or out of date need to be done.

2

Tracking Ovulation

IUI can follow your natural cycle or use tablets or injections that help an egg mature. Ultrasound scans watch the follicle grow, and a trigger injection may be given to fix the timing.

3

Sperm Wash and Insemination

On the day, at Nulife IVF in Seawoods, your partner gives a semen sample, which is washed and concentrated. A soft catheter then carries it past the cervix into the uterus. You stay awake and can go home shortly afterwards.

4

The Two-Week Wait

Normal daily activity is fine and bed rest is not needed. Progesterone support is sometimes prescribed. A pregnancy test is done about two weeks later, as testing sooner can mislead.

FAQs About IUI Treatment

Who is eligible for IUI treatment?

IUI may be suggested for unexplained infertility, a mildly low sperm count or movement, ovulation problems that respond to medicines, cervical factors, or difficulty with intercourse. It needs at least one open fallopian tube. Your doctor confirms suitability only after both partners have been tested.

No single figure applies to everyone. The chance in each IUI cycle is modest and depends mostly on the woman’s age, the reason for infertility, the sperm quality after washing and whether ovulation medicines are used. Dr. Grishma will give you a realistic estimate once she has seen your reports.

One IUI cycle runs alongside a single menstrual cycle. Scans begin in the first few days of your period, the insemination is done around ovulation, usually near mid-cycle, and the pregnancy test follows roughly a fortnight after that. The insemination itself is over in a few minutes.

Most women find IUI no worse than a pap smear, with brief discomfort as the catheter passes through the cervix. Mild cramps or light spotting for a day afterwards are common and settle on their own. Call the clinic if you develop strong pain, fever or heavy bleeding.

No. IUI helps sperm reach the egg at the right time, but it cannot guarantee pregnancy. Many couples need more than one attempt and some do not conceive with IUI at all. If it has not worked after a few well-timed cycles, your doctor will review the plan with you.

There is no fixed number. Many doctors take stock after three or four properly timed IUI cycles, and sooner if the woman is in her late thirties or a new problem shows up on tests. It is sensible to agree a limit with your doctor at the start, so you are not left repeating a treatment that is not working.

IUI is a low-risk procedure. Cramping and slight spotting are the usual after-effects, and infection is uncommon. When ovulation medicines are used, more than one egg may be released, which raises the chance of twins, and the ovaries can occasionally over-respond. Scans during the cycle are there to catch this early.

With IUI, prepared sperm are placed in the uterus and the egg is fertilized inside your body. With IVF treatment, eggs are collected, fertilized in a laboratory and an embryo is transferred back. IUI is simpler and usually tried first when the tubes are open. IVF is advised for blocked tubes, very low sperm counts, or when IUI has not worked.

You will usually lie down for a short while and then go home. Work, walking and routine chores can continue as normal, and intercourse is generally allowed unless your doctor says otherwise. Take any prescribed medicines as directed and wait for the advised date before doing a pregnancy test.

The total depends on whether the cycle is natural or uses ovulation medicines, the type of medicine, how many scans are needed and the semen preparation. Tests done beforehand are separate. Ask for a written breakdown at your consultation so you know what one cycle includes before you begin.
