What IVF Treatment Involves
IVF, or in vitro fertilization, means eggs are collected from the ovaries and fertilized with sperm in a laboratory. An embryo is then placed in the uterus. When sperm count or movement is low, ICSI may be used, in which one sperm is placed directly into each egg.
Dr. Grishma Ranjangaonkar (MBBS, DGO) is a trained Infertility Specialist with 15+ years of experience. She reviews the reports of both partners, tells you plainly whether IVF, ICSI or a simpler treatment suits you, and guides you through each stage. For more detail, read our IVF guide.
When IVF Treatment Is Usually Advised
IVF is not the first step for most couples. Many conceive with ovulation tablets, timed intercourse or IUI treatment, so IVF is usually suggested only when those options are unlikely to work or have already been tried.
Not everyone is suitable. The decision comes after tests for both partners, and your age and the time you have been trying both matter.
IVF May Be Suggested When
- Both fallopian tubes are blocked or badly damaged
- Sperm count or movement is very low
- Several IUI cycles have not led to pregnancy
- Moderate or severe endometriosis is affecting fertility
- Ovarian reserve is low, often with increasing age
- Infertility stays unexplained after other treatment

How an IVF Cycle Works, Step by Step
Every plan differs a little, but most IVF cycles move through these four stages.
1
Consultation and Tests
Both partners attend. Your history and earlier reports are reviewed, any missing tests are advised, and you are told whether IVF suits you before anything begins.
2
Stimulation and Monitoring
Daily hormone injections for around 10 to 14 days help several eggs to mature. Ultrasound scans and blood tests track your response so the dose can be adjusted.
3
Egg Collection and Fertilization
The eggs are collected through the vagina under sedation as a short day procedure. They are fertilized by IVF or ICSI, and the embryos are grown in the laboratory for a few days.
4
Embryo Transfer and Pregnancy Test
An embryo is placed in the uterus through a thin tube, usually without anaesthesia. Good spare embryos may be frozen. A blood pregnancy test follows about two weeks later.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Who is eligible for IVF treatment?
IVF may be advised for blocked fallopian tubes, a very low sperm count, ovulation problems that have not responded to simpler treatment, or unexplained infertility. A diagnosis alone does not decide it. Dr. Grishma first considers the test results of both partners, your age and any earlier treatment.
What is the success rate of IVF?
There is no one figure that fits every couple. Your chance in each cycle depends mainly on the age of the woman, the number and quality of the eggs and sperm, the cause of infertility and the health of the uterus. Dr. Grishma will discuss your individual chances once your tests are complete, and a second or third cycle is often needed.
How long does the IVF process take?
One IVF cycle usually takes about four to six weeks, counted from the first hormone injection to the day of the pregnancy test. Tests and planning beforehand can add a few weeks. If the embryos are frozen, the transfer happens in a later cycle.
Is IVF painful?
Most women find IVF uncomfortable rather than painful. The injections can sting or bruise, and the ovaries may feel bloated towards the end of stimulation. You are given sedation or anaesthesia for egg collection, and period-like cramps for a day or two afterwards are common. Embryo transfer usually feels much like a pap smear.
Does IVF guarantee pregnancy?
No. IVF improves the chance of pregnancy for many couples, but no clinic can promise a baby, and a cycle can fail even when every stage goes to plan. If that happens, Dr. Grishma reviews the cycle with you and discusses whether another attempt or a different approach makes sense.
What are the risks of IVF?
The main risks are ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), where the ovaries over-respond to the injections, and a twin or triplet pregnancy if more than one embryo is transferred. Egg collection carries a small risk of bleeding or infection. Contact your doctor urgently if you have severe abdominal pain or swelling, breathlessness, repeated vomiting or very little urine after egg collection.
What affects the cost of IVF?
The total depends on how much stimulation medicine you need, whether ICSI, embryo freezing or donor eggs form part of the plan, and how many cycles or transfers are required. Tests and scans may be charged separately. Ask for a written estimate that lists each item before you begin.
How can we prepare for IVF?
Both partners can help by stopping smoking, limiting alcohol and working towards a healthy weight. Women are usually advised to take folic acid, and conditions such as thyroid disease or diabetes should be well controlled first. Our preconception care page explains these checks.
How do I book a consultation for IVF treatment in Vashi?
Phone or WhatsApp the clinic on 9967738303, or send the enquiry form on this page. Fertility consultations are held Monday to Saturday, from 11 AM until 2 PM and again from 6:30 PM until 9 PM. It helps if both partners come, with past records, current prescriptions and recent ultrasound, blood and semen reports.
