What is Laparoscopic Gynecologic Surgery?

Laparoscopic gynecologic surgery, often called keyhole surgery, means operating on the uterus, ovaries or fallopian tubes through a few cuts of a centimetre or less. A laparoscope, a thin tube carrying a camera and light, goes in at the navel and shows the pelvis on a screen while fine instruments do the work. It can be diagnostic, to find the cause of pelvic pain or infertility, operative, to treat a problem, or both.

Who Is Laparoscopic Surgery Suitable For?

An operation is not where treatment usually starts. Many fibroids and ovarian cysts need only monitoring or medicine, and surgery is advised when symptoms continue, a cyst grows or looks unusual, or a problem is lowering your chances of pregnancy.

Not everyone can have it by keyhole. A very large fibroid, dense scar tissue or a suspected cancer is often safer to treat through an open cut. For hysteroscopy, see our minimally invasive gynecology surgery page.

Risks and Warning Signs After Surgery

Laparoscopy is generally safe, but it is still an operation. Possible problems include bleeding, infection, a blood clot in a leg vein, anaesthetic reactions and, rarely, damage to the bowel, bladder or a blood vessel. Occasionally the surgeon must switch to an open operation for safety.

If you notice any sign listed here, contact the clinic the same day, and if you cannot reach us go to the nearest hospital emergency department. Chest pain, breathlessness, fainting or heavy bleeding need the emergency department straight away. Our laparoscopic surgery guide covers preparation and recovery week by week.

Laparoscopic Surgery in Navi Mumbai: Common Questions

Is laparoscopic surgery painful?

You are asleep during the operation and feel nothing at the time. Afterwards, soreness around the cuts and bloating are usual for a few days, and some women get an ache at the shoulder tip from the gas. Simple pain relief normally controls it.

It depends on what is done. After a diagnostic laparoscopy or a short procedure, many women are home by evening. After a longer operation such as fibroid removal, one night in hospital is more usual. The operation is done in a hospital chosen with you, according to the facilities it needs and your budget, and you are told the likely stay before a date is fixed.

In most cases, yes, unless the operation removes the uterus, both tubes or both ovaries. The keyhole approach itself does not stop you conceiving, and treating endometriosis, a cyst or a fibroid may improve the chances for some women. It cannot promise a pregnancy, because age, egg reserve and your partner’s results matter too, so a fertility assessment often goes alongside.

No single approach suits everyone. Laparoscopy is widely used for non-cancerous gynecological problems, but very large fibroids, dense scarring from earlier operations or some heart and lung conditions can make open surgery or another treatment safer. Dr. Grishma decides this with you once she has examined you and seen your scans.

A diagnostic laparoscopy is usually over in well under an hour. Operative surgery, for example taking out a cyst or fibroid or treating endometriosis, often needs one to three hours. Allow extra time for the anaesthetic and for waking up in the recovery area.

After a diagnostic laparoscopy or a small procedure, many women can try once they feel well, often from the next cycle. After fibroid removal the uterus needs longer to heal, so a wait of some months is usual. Ask for a timeframe based on exactly what was done.

It depends on which operation you need, how long it takes, the hospital and room, the anaesthesia, the tests required beforehand and the length of your stay. As these differ for each patient, ask for an estimate at your consultation once the planned operation is clear.
