Preconception Care in Vashi, Navi Mumbai

A couple consults a female doctor for preconception care advice.

What is Preconception Care?

Preconception care is a health check and a set of simple changes that both partners make before trying for a baby. It is also called pre-pregnancy counselling. Dr. Grishma Ranjangaonkar offers preconception care in Vashi for women and couples planning a pregnancy, looking at your health, medicines and vaccines so that anything treatable is dealt with before you conceive.

Why Is Pre-Pregnancy Counselling Important?

A baby’s brain and spine start forming very early, often before a pregnancy is even confirmed. That is why the months before conception matter. A planned check gives you time to treat what can be treated and to begin on a steady footing.

What Preconception Care Includes

A pre-pregnancy check-up covers six areas. Your doctor will go through each one and tell you which apply to you.

1

Health Screening and Assessments

Your doctor reviews your medical, family and past pregnancy history, examines you and may advise blood tests. You may also be offered carrier screening for inherited conditions such as thalassaemia.

2

Nutrition and Lifestyle Counselling

Eating well supports fertility and early pregnancy. Aim for a balanced diet with enough iron, calcium, protein and folate, stay active, and work towards a healthy weight, as weight affects ovulation.

3

Avoiding Harmful
Substances

Stop smoking and all tobacco, and avoid alcohol and recreational drugs while trying to conceive. Tell your doctor about every medicine and herbal product you use, and never stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

4

Vaccinations

Your doctor checks your protection against rubella, chickenpox (varicella) and hepatitis B. Rubella and chickenpox vaccines cannot be given during pregnancy, so they are taken beforehand, usually with about a month's gap before you try to conceive.

5

Managing Chronic Conditions

Diabetes, raised blood pressure, thyroid disorders and epilepsy should be well controlled before you conceive. Some medicines are switched to ones that are safer in pregnancy, which is easier while you are still planning.

6

Folic Acid Supplementation

Folic acid lowers the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida. The usual advice is 400 micrograms daily, from at least one month before you try (ideally three) and through at least the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Some women need a higher prescribed dose.

Preconception Care for Both Partners

Pre-pregnancy planning works better when both of you take part, because egg health and sperm health both count. Sperm take around three months to develop, so changes a man makes today show later. With regular cycles, our ovulation calculator can estimate your fertile days.

What Happens at a Pre-Pregnancy Counselling Visit

Plan for about 30 to 45 minutes for a first preconception visit, and come together if you can.

1

A Detailed Conversation

Your doctor asks about your cycles, earlier pregnancies, illnesses in the family, medicines and daily habits. Carry old records, prescriptions and recent reports.

2

Check-Up and Tests

Weight and blood pressure are noted and you are examined where needed. Blood tests are often advised, with an ultrasound or pap smear if one is due.

3

Your Personal Plan

You leave with clear advice on folic acid, vaccines, diet and any medicine changes, and a date to review your reports before you start trying.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the best time to start preconception care?

Ideally, book a pre-pregnancy counselling visit three to six months ahead of trying, and earlier if you have a long-term condition such as diabetes, thyroid disease or epilepsy. That leaves time for folic acid, vaccines and medicine changes. If you have already started trying, a visit is still worthwhile.

It does not treat infertility, but it can remove common obstacles. Reaching a healthy weight, stopping tobacco, controlling thyroid or sugar levels and treating irregular cycles can all help natural conception. How much it helps differs for each couple, and the guide to trying to conceive has more detail.

Yes. Sperm carry half of the baby’s genetic material, and a male cause is found in many couples who take longer to conceive. Men are advised to stop tobacco, limit alcohol, keep a healthy weight and mention any medicines or past illness.

The list varies with your age and medical background. Commonly advised tests include haemoglobin, blood group, blood sugar, thyroid function, rubella immunity and screening for infections such as hepatitis B and HIV, with thalassaemia screening where relevant. A pap smear or pelvic ultrasound may be added. You will be asked for only what is relevant to you.

Yes, it is still useful. Many women feel well but have low iron, a thyroid problem or no immunity to rubella, and these are simple to correct before pregnancy. It is more important still for women over 35, after a miscarriage or a difficult pregnancy, or where an inherited condition runs in the family.

With pills, a copper IUD or condoms, fertility usually returns quickly and you can try when you feel ready. After the contraceptive injection, ovulation can take several months longer to return. Begin folic acid before you stop your method, and see our contraception advice page if you are unsure about timing.
