Questions Patients Often Ask

From your first visit to lifelong care

Most specialists recommend a first gynecological visit between ages 13 and 15, or earlier if periods have started or there are concerns about menstruation. The first visit is usually a conversation rather than an examination, so there is no reason to delay it. Establishing the relationship early makes every future visit easier.

For most women, an annual visit covers preventive screening, a Pap smear when due, breast examination, and a general health check-in. Pregnancy, PCOD, fertility treatment, and perimenopause typically call for more frequent visits. Your doctor will recommend a schedule that fits your specific situation.

PCOD or PCOS is a common hormonal condition that can affect periods, fertility, weight, skin, and long-term metabolic health. Management is personalised and usually combines lifestyle adjustments (movement, sleep, balanced nutrition), targeted medication where helpful, and ongoing tracking. Most women manage it very well with consistent, evidence-based care.

The general guideline is to see a specialist after 12 months of trying to conceive without success if you are under 35, and after 6 months if you are 35 or older. If you already know of conditions like PCOS, irregular periods, endometriosis, prior surgery, or a partner-related concern, it makes sense to consult earlier.

IUI (intrauterine insemination) is a simpler, less invasive procedure where prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus around ovulation. IVF (in vitro fertilisation) involves stimulating the ovaries, retrieving eggs, fertilising them in a laboratory, and transferring an embryo back. Which option suits you depends on your diagnosis, age, and prior treatment history. Your doctor will walk you through both before deciding.

Not always. Short-term irregularity can come from stress, weight changes, exercise shifts, travel, or hormonal contraception. However persistent irregularity, very heavy bleeding, severe pain, or cycles consistently shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days are worth investigating. The underlying cause is usually treatable once identified.

Your first prenatal visit typically includes a detailed medical history, a physical examination, baseline blood and urine tests, an early ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy and due date, and a conversation about nutrition, supplements, and lifestyle. It is also the right time to ask anything on your mind. There are no silly questions during pregnancy.

Whenever your symptoms start affecting your daily life. Hot flashes, disrupted sleep, mood changes, painful intercourse, and heavy or unpredictable periods are all worth a conversation. Menopause is not something to push through silently. Safe, evidence-based options exist to ease most symptoms.
